Canada's oil and gas sector alone provided half a trillion dollars for government programs over a 20-year period

Canadian Energy Centre Executive Director of Research Mark Milke joined Business Insider host Mario Toneguzzi to discuss updated estimates of the gross revenue contribution that Canada’s energy sector made to federal, provincial, and municipal governments between 2000 and 2019.

According to the Research Briefthe most recent data shows the energy sector’s cumulative fiscal contribution to government revenue was nearly $701.2 billion over the 20-year period, an average of nearly $35.1 billion per year. Revenue generated by the oil and gas sector alone over the same period was $504.9 billion, an average of $25.2 billion per year
